ABC frontman Martin Fry today backed The Star's campaign to target X Factor votes this week for One Direction – and help put South Yorkshire on the music map for another generation of fans.

Martin, whose Sheffield band conquered the world in the 1980s, believes Doncaster boy Louis Tomlinson and his band can win.

And he gave them the thumbs-up when he held up one of The Star's Vote One Direction posters backstage after his performance at the 80s Rewind Christmas Tour concert at Sheffield's Motorpoint Arena.

Martin, who is still a regular visitor to Sheffield, said: "I've heard a lot of good things about One Direction. My advice to them is to enjoy it and don't blink. Time goes so fast.

"It would be great to see another pop star coming out of South Yorkshire.

"Sunday night is a big night for them. They need to relax and just do what they do. They need the votes to win and I think it's great that The Star is getting behind the local lad. They've always given me great support. It's so appreciated."
